Kew Jubaea - Dead!

Post by GREVILLE »

Just heard! The biggest living thing in captivity is no more.

The Kew Jubaea was felled on Monday. An icon, gone forever.

Flabergasted that such a plant/seed conservation site has felled such a tree,

Its gives wine, it flowers, and it gives fruit.

There is no news at Kew they have felled it.

And in just 100 years it will be as impressive! ;)

There was already one of the offspring of the tree planted (by the Queen) in the 1980's, so it is now a decent size, but not yet trunking & they have produced many other seedlings/plants. But it does seem criminal that such an old & horticulturally important tree has been felled, it would have been possible to remove it from the glass house & plant it outside, but they obviously felt it wasn't worth the trouble & expense... :(

They should plant the next one outside and save all the hassle every 100 years.

Jubaea chilensis will grow perfectly well outside in London.

But i suppose thats to much effort.

Well, in 168 years . . . it was planted in 1846

To be fair it only gives wine when felled so that is only an asset to it now.

Sad to hear about though, first came across it on David Attenbrough's life of plants.

I wonder if they will grow one from seeds of the mother plant.

The offspring planted in an adjacent bed around thirty years ago grew out at an odd angle. I wonder if they've saved this to replant it in the right position!

This post should be retitled "Kew Jubaea Murdered through lack of interest".
