Schefflera taiwaniana is reliable here [Inland Cornwall]. It is about to flower for the first time for me. This is Edward Needham's introduction [known informally as 'gracillimus'].
To my eye Schefflera rhododendrifolia is more coarse, but it is of proven hardiness in England. It flowers most years here.

Schefflera enneaphylla is my favourite at the moment.
Schefflera macrophylla defoliated at -5C in the poly tunnel and was trying to regrow from the top of bare stems.
I have cut it to the ground and it is regrowing. It is reliable in 'coastal' Cornwall, though grows straight up to give a good view to passing helicopters!
See this discussion.

Thankfully they all flower at slightly different times, so seed is [so far] coming true. It needs an exceptionally mild winter to ripen though - being 'ripe' in the early spring.Schefflera macrophylla defoliated at -5C in the poly tunnel and was trying to regrow from the top of bare stems.

Great stuff Chad, amazing Sheffie's.

When I had my first macrophylla, I took Crug's low temperature as a rough guide. Unfortunately it died the first Winter, I had it for just a few months.
I've got another 2 which I've had for a few years, (one from Chad, thank you) but feel that they would both benefit from being out of their pots and planted in the ground, but that's not going to happen here I'm afraid.

I'm at an age where my back goes out more than I do.
