Canna Durban

Post by LauraS »

I have recently noticed that my Canna Durban has started to grow, and grow quite quickly :) It was left out through winter and started growing last week.

One of the joys of living in the south west seaside area. Mine is growing away nicely in the greenhouse. Would have been toast if I'd have left it out overwinter. Nice plant.

Are you growing any other varieties? I've been buying off a specialist Ebay grower this year who has good stock at sensible prices. I'd become a bit nihilistic after the amount of virus in the dutch stock, so I'm now a little more cheerful and not just growing hybrids and species from seeds.

I dug all our canna's up last year and potted them up, several including Durban and Tropicana gold are shooting away :D

I bought a Durban & Pretoria over the Easter weekend because they had both started to shoot through, and their leaf colours could clearly be seen.

Really looking forward to see how much growth I get from them... icon_thumleft

I have only got a Durban and a Tropicana but I may try and get a brasiliensis from Lucien when his are ready to be potted on :) I got the Durban from Damian who had a small Garden Centre over in the next town over from me. It has really nice colours on it .

That single small seedling you gave me at the Akamba 2007 meet Gary has produced soooo many babies now. If anyone wants seed I can bring some to Akamba. I also have spare C.indica (Dave Brown) seeds.

Sorting out (clearing out) the seedbox at the weekend I found an envelope marked as brasiliensis , so sorry to whomever gave me those seeds.

That could have been from me Lucien. I was handing out envelopes of it at the Spracklin meet two years ago. I have two year old brasiliensis seed as I didn't germinate any last year for some reason. Would this still be viable?

Hi Lucien
If you still have some seed left I'd be interested, it seems the only thing I can grow from seed at the moment

Only one Canna here since cleared my old stock out due to the virus last year.

I have 'Black Knight', which even under glass was only just shooting like
yours , LauraS.

Planted it in a large pot over the weekend with a helping of slug pellets for protection !

I'll bring a load of seed with me to the meet, come find me if you want some.

I did get a PM from someone earlier, but the forum died whilst replying and now can't find it. Come find me, and I don't need anything in return, just pass on the seeds you get next year :)
