Re: ensete pups
Depends on the Ensete eyefi.....
Maurelii can, ventricosum does not, Montbeliardii maybe, but not easy, the others (glaucum, hiniba, superbum etc) I don't know.

Re: ensete pups
In theory ventricosum should pup when the growing points destroyed.Haven't tried it out yet mind, but think I will
being as I've still got a few of this years seed grown plants knocking around in pots.
I read on t'internet somewhere(maybe bananas.org) that in africa they divide the corms into 4,one section they replant. The rest gets eaten.I'll have a look and see if I can find the article.
Steve
Okay,Ive been able to find the article I read before, but I have found another, better one instead.
It explains all you'd want to know about ensete production in ethiopia

Re: ensete pups
Just had the briefest look through Steve and that is very informative. Initial scan suggests that the ventricosum we are growing is the wild form which is not the hardiest, and that the cultivated ones may be a lot tougher. I presume Maurelii, Montbelairdii, Hinaba etc are cultivars which may explain the more hardy experience we have in overwintering them
Best regards
Dave

Re: ensete pups
so how do you get Maurelil to grow pups? Mine is happy growing it's single stem.Dave Brown wrote:Depends on the Ensete eyefi.....

Re: ensete pups
Thanks Steve, a very informative document. I had always imagined that in their natural habitat they experienced 'tropical' temperatures. The fact that the range is between 10-22C explains why they continue to grow well even in cool summers like this one. Their drought tolerance is also a useful trait.
I wish I could get the hang of the method for producing pups, my attempt with 'Montbeliardii' failed miserably.

Re: ensete pups
Andrew, You have to destroy the main growing point then the corm sprouts all over the place Not for the feint hearted

Re: ensete pups
Have you tried it yet Steve I have heard you can buy Ensete ventricosum corms in the US, but when mine got root rot in winter 2007/8 I didn't find anything I would call a corm, even though it was 3 years old. Lost it sadly in winter 2008/9SteveW wrote:In theory ventricosum should pup when the growing points destroyed. Haven't tried it out yet mind, but think I will

Re: ensete pups
I never got round to trying it in the end Dave, just kind of forgot I was intending to do it
I might still give one a try tomorrow though,we've got a few more weeks left til the crappy weather arrives and theres space on the heatmat.I know I won't get any plants out of it,but I should hopefully see signs of it trying to pup at least.
I'll keep you posted if theres any sign of life

Re: ensete pups
How big are they Steve Are they like Colocaisa and don't have a corm as such in the first year
Best regards

Re: ensete pups
They're not that big really, but definitely large enough to try propping.Although I'll have to use a slightly different method to my usual cutting back the p-stem and hitting the meristem with a hammer technique .If I did that with the ventricosums there wouldn't be much left of them to try and prop Think I'll try just cutting the meristem out with a knife, might be a bit more reliable
I'm pretty sure that ensetes form corms from word go Dave, same as musas.
Last year I had a glauca germinate real late, well into autumn. And being as it was so late I just left it potted up on the bench in the greenhouse thinking theres no way it'll survive winter at that size.Well it looked like it had died come spring,as there was nothing but a very dried up stem, but once things started to warm up it resprouted so there must've been a corm there
