Cordyline obtecta 'Green Goddess'

Post by GARYnNAT »

I gave a few of these away a few years ago, how is everyones doing?

Mine is doing really well, I think that this plant is a good substitute foe 'Indivisa'. as although it does not have the orange stripe on the leaves like 'Indivisa' it has similar width leaves, but without the fussy nature of 'Indivisa'

They are very nice Gary, but I don't think I have ever seen them for sale. The main concentration in suppliers is for fancy coloured ones.

Similar plant to Kaspar Lee but different and wider leaves. I grew these from seed sent from New Zealand by Peter Richardson several years ago, I had 'Green Goddess' and 'Emerald Goddess' from peter, 'Emerald Goddess' was much slower to germinate and much slower growing but looks identical to 'Green Goddess' . I kept two myself but gave the spare away to PeteFree earlier this year.

I know that they do pop up for sale occasionally, Kev Spence has a nice one planted out, but they are difficult to source. hopefully if mine keeps going the way it is there will be seed available in a couple of years :D

The problem will be hybridisation Gary. Unless you have another Green Goddess in flower at the same time.

These are the self sown seedlings at the base of my big green cordy, look at the variation in colour  and none of that has come from the mother so the insects are cross pollenating the local cordys.

You gave me one Gary, so to speak :D

It's still growing well, thanks, hopefully we will get it planted out next year. Lovely looking plant.

That's a "me too" Gary - you are such a generous and giving soul - you seem to have given lots of people one...

I planted mine in May and it has grown a lot of new leaves - I'm hoping it will shrug off the winter and be waist high by this time next year (we won't specify whose waist...)

Its leaves aren't all that broad (though probably broader than a similar-sized australis) - do they get wider as the plant matures? Or have I got Emerald rather than Green Goddess?

Yes Dave. I think it lasted a couple of years before it passed away. Shame really as I had big hopes for it.
